Red Canary’s Backdoors & Breaches expansion deck
For Black Hat USA 2023, Red Canary partnered with Black Hills Information Security on a special expansion for Backdoors & Breaches, their popular D&D-inspired incident response game. My role was to design the four signature cards for this expansion, a creative challenge that involved harmonizing Red Canary’s distinct brand identity with the game's beloved, playful aesthetic.

When it comes to understanding the year's biggest cyber threats, many security teams look to Red Canary’s annual Threat Detection Report. It breaks down complex data in a clear, accessible way. This established a visual foundation for the project that was authoritative yet approachable, built on trust through clear communication.

Harmonizing two identities
My guiding principle for this project was to create a visual bridge. The goal was to infuse the world of Backdoors & Breaches with the distinct visual identity established in Red Canary's annual Threat Detection Report. It was important the design of each card was recognizable, while still honoring the game's established and playful aesthetic. These designs were carefully crafted to feel both unique and perfectly at home within the decks.
